Oscar The Cat With The Bionic Paws

LONDON – Oscar the cat may have lost one of his nine lives, but his new prosthetic paws make him the world’s first bionic cat.

After losing his two rear paws in a nasty encounter with a combine harvester last October, the black cat with green eyes was outfitted with metallic pegs that link the ankles to new prosthetic feet and mimic the way deer antlers grow through skin. Oscar is now back on his feet and hopping over hurdles like tissue paper rolls.

After Oscar’s farming accident, which happened when the 2 1/2-year-old-cat was lazing in the sun in the British Channel Isles, his owners, Kate and Mike Nolan, took him to their local veterinarian. In turn, the vet referred Oscar to Dr. Noel Fitzpatrick, a neuro-orthopedic surgeon in Eashing, 35 miles southwest of London.

Fitzpatrick said he and biomedical engineers designed the artificial paws so that they would be fused to the bone and skin. “That allows this implant to work as a seesaw on the bottom of the animal’s limbs to give him (an) effectively normal gait,” he said. “Oscar can now run and jump about as cats should do.” (more…)

Sex Distractions Behind The Wheel

1 in 7 People Admit To Having Sex Behind The Wheel

When most people think of “distracted driving” they think of texting, talking, or eating food. But a survey on distracted driving has found that sex accounts for a good bit of it, too: About 1 in 7 admitted to having had sex or performing a sexual act while driving, reports Wired. (The survey was on the honor system, so there might be some exaggeration in effect.) Other automotive pastimes? Reading the newspaper and playing video games.

“It is truly unbelievable what people are doing while driving,” said an exec at the company that performed the survey, headset maker Jabra. “The results of our survey show that so many people are distracted and doing other things while on the road—even though they know the consequences that can occur.”

Beautiful Women Bad For Men’s Health?

“If you wanna be happy for the rest of your life, never make a pretty woman your wife,” goes the song. But a new study by the University of Valencia reveals that just being around a beautiful female can cause men to release cortisol, a nasty stress hormone.

Cortisol is produced during physical or psychological stress and can contribute to worsening heart disease, diabetes, erectile dysfunction, clinical depression and hypertension. In the study, 84 men attempted to solve a sudoku puzzle with a woman they considered “out of their league” in the room. When each man was left alone with the gorgeous lady, his cortisol levels spiked. Researchers believe that the hormone increase had to do with the opportunity for courtship.

Patti Britton, a clinical sexologist and author of “The Art of Sex Coaching,” says she isn’t surprised that this situation could trigger the stress hormone.

“Men are much more vulnerable than they let on,” she says. “They’re taught to display bravado, but it’s often a cover-up for insecurities that lie underneath. For them, a beautiful woman is an intimidation factor, and the fight or flight response is triggered.”

When it comes to relationships and courtship, excitement and fear are two emotions that frequently go hand in hand. But the good news is, by using some specific techniques, cortisol release can be kept at bay.

“Men need to self-soothe the anxious response,” says Britton. “They need to stop the negative messages, the negative self-talk.”

Britton also says that when men stop seeing women solely as sex objects, they’ll have an easier time keeping anxiety in check.

“You have to be willing to humanize a potential partner and stop objectifying her,” she says. “When someone like Pamela Anderson walks into a room — she’s overwhelmingly beautiful. But inside her there’s also a vulnerable person who wants to be loved.”

Instead of simply avoiding the hotties, men should work on boosting their confidence levels.

“Shift away from ‘she’s out of my league’ and into ‘this is someone I’d like to know,’” says Britton. “Humanize her. In fact, the more men put themselves out there with women they find attractive, the easier it will be to feel genuine confidence. If you’re afraid of swimming, the first step is to get into the water. Practice makes perfect.”

Dr. David J. Ores, a general practitioner in Manhattan, feels that the study should be taken with a grain of salt.

“This shows a very transient, brief rise in cortisol levels,” says Ores. “A steady elevation over 10 or 20 years caused by being in the wrong job or an unhappy relationship would be more cause for concern.”

Ores also points out that once you snag a pretty woman, chances are you will not walk around in a constant state of stress for the rest of your life.

“As the relationship evolves, each partner will see many more features they like or dislike, and a certain comfort level can arise.”

Pub Note: Then I am one dead freaking individual. I spend almost ALL my time around beautiful women… YIKES! The only saving grace I have is that I am waaaay out of  THEIR league! icon smile Beautiful Women Bad For Mens Health?

The truth behind 13 physical quirks – [HEALTH]

1. Why Do You “Laugh Until You Cry”?
Experts don’t really know. One thing to consider: Laughing and crying are similar psychological reactions. “Both occur during states of high emotional arousal, involve lingering effects, and don’t cleanly turn on and off,” says Robert R. Provine, PhD, a psychologist at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, and author of Laughter: A Scientific Investigation. We associate crying with sadness, but tearing up is an even more complex human response. Tears are triggered by a variety of emotions–”by pain, sadness, and in some cases even extreme mirth. It’s just the way we’ve evolved,” says Lee Duffner, MD, a professor of ophthalmology at the University of Miami’s Bascom Palmer Eye Institute.

As it turns out, that’s good, because both laughter and crying can ease a stressful experience, probably by counteracting the effects of cortisol and adrenaline. So if you ever find yourself laughing until you cry, count yourself lucky.

2. Why Do Onions Make You Tear Up?
When you cut into an onion, you rupture its cells, releasing enzymes that produce a gas called propanethial sulfoxide. Once that gas reaches your eyes, it reacts with tears to produce a mild sulfuric acid. And that hurts. The brain then signals the eyes’ tear glands to produce more liquid to flush the stuff out. The more you chop, the more irritating gas you produce and the more tears you shed. “The onion’s chemical reaction is a defense mechanism that evolved to repel pests,” explains University of Wisconsin—Madison horticultural professor Irwin Goldman, PhD.

Keep the stinging and crying to a minimum by chilling an onion in the freezer before cutting it; cold temperatures slow release of the enzymes. The highest concentration of enzymes is at the bottom of the onion, so cut it last to postpone the weeping (and the irritation) for as long as possible.

3. Why Do Your Joints Crack?
The most common type of joint in the human body is the diarthrodial joint–knuckles and shoulders are examples–in which two bones come together in a capsule. Inside that joint capsule is a lubricant called synovial fluid, which contains dissolved gases. When you stretch the joint, you’re actually compressing it and the fluid within, forcing those nitrogen-rich gases to escape the synovial solution. The release of “air” within the joint capsule is what you hear as a “pop.” Once the gas is released, the joint is a bit more flexible (enabling you to go a little further in a yoga pose, for example).

But you’ve probably noticed that you can’t immediately crack the same joint again. That’s because the gases released in a pop must first
reabsorb into the fluid, a process that takes 15 to 30 minutes. If you habitually crack your knuckles to relieve tension, try concentrating on your breath for 30 seconds instead. Knuckle cracking doesn’t lead to arthritis, but it can lead to decreased grip strength. (more…)
