What is the first thing that you see when you look at the image above? This image is being used to make a point about something that I see asked time and time again. Find out exactly what, after the jump.
I bet you noticed the black dot in the middle of the page. Don’t worry you’re not the only one that is of course the first thing that the eye is drawn to. It’s the one thing that does NOT belong. The above image represents the exact reason why models who get tattoos ultimately hurt their careers.
A clothing designer who let’s say designs bikinis will not hire models with tattoos to be in their fashion show. Why not? Well the above image is the answer. They want to sell their bikini, and a tattoo or piercing just doesn’t belong and the viewer’s eye will be drawn away from what’s really being sold.
And yes while we are well aware that there is photoshop and make-up why should the client’s budget bear the expense of the additional cost of the make-up which never works and requires photoshop work to touch up the bruise looking patch of make-up, or even the cost of digitizing the tattoo out when it would be cheaper to just find a model who was smart enough NOT to ruin her body with tattoos.
The above ad for Peta featuring Duff (Guns ‘n Roses) and Susan McKagan we see that Susan is sporting numerous tattoos. And I can hear it now, “She’s got tattoos and she’s on this ad.” Well for one you’re NOT her! For two Susan Holmes – McKagan actually is a real life model and bathing suit designer and guess what…. wait for it…. She has NO tattoos!
Those tattoos were applied after the shoot took place. If you don’t believe me check out the episode of Married To Rock on E! where this shoot is featured. Below you can see a video of after the shoot and see what’s actually going on. I hope that this helps with a greater understanding of why it is that tattoos are frowned upon by agents, and clients alike.
